The Ogun State Government has commenced a major environmental remediation exercise in Ogijo following investigations into alleged lead contamination linked to used lead-acid battery recycling facilities operating within the industrial community.
The exercise follows a comprehensive audit of the recycling plants, including tests conducted on soil, water, air, and residents' blood samples to determine the level of contamination.
Speaking during the flag-off of the cleanup, the General Manager of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Kehinde Bello, disclosed that the government has begun evacuating hazardous slag illegally dumped in communities surrounding the recycling facilities.
According to Bello, the evacuation process is expected to take several weeks due to the large volume of waste scattered across affected areas. He assured residents that the government remains committed to protecting public health and restoring the environment.
The state government also directed all used lead-acid battery recycling operators to upgrade their facilities by installing automatic battery breakers and strictly comply with approved environmental standards for slag management to prevent future pollution.
