Sportybet Loses Court Battle Over 900m Winnings Dispute

Judge Dismisses Case Against Customers Who Spoke Out A major development has unfolded in the ongoing controversy surrounding Sportybet, the betting platform accused by several customers of refusing to pay out legitimate winnings totaling ₦900 million.   Sportybet had attempted to sue the aggrieved customers for defamation after they voiced their frustrations on social media. However, in a decisive ruling, the court dismissed Sportybet’s case entirely, siding with the customers’ right to speak out.   The judgment raises pressing questions about accountability in Nigeria’s betting industry. Why would a platform pursue legal action against its own customers instead of simply honoring the bets? For many observers, the ruling highlights a troubling pattern of avoidance and intimidation rather than transparency and fairness.      The Bigger Picture This case underscores the importance of consumer protection in Nigeria’s fast-growing online b...
